476,518. Expanding - pulley gearing. KING, E.G., CLOSE, J. B., and ROBERT, R. Sept. 11, 1936, No. 24822. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1935. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] The working - faces b, d respectively of a V-groove expanding- pulley a and the working - elements c of a belt, are formed as surfaces of revolution of a curve, other than a circle, the algebraic equation of which is of the second degree, and the belt-elements c are flexibly or pivotally connected together and are each formed of one non-resilient piece of metal. A suitable curve is an ellipsoid. By these means the belt requires only a small force to vary the speed-ratio, and excessive tension will cause it to slip rather than break or jam in the pulleys. Constant belt-tension in varying speed-positions is also assured. In Figs. 3 to 5, the belt comprises a series of pivoted metallic links e, slotted to receive the working- elements c. In modifications the working- elements constitute the pivots for the links e; or they are directly pivoted together without additional links ; or they are threaded on one or more lengths of stranded metal cable, together with wedge-shaped spacers alternating between the working-elements.
