Abstract
456,516. Variable - speed gearing. HATCHER, E. C., Instow, Woodside Road, Northwood, Middlesex. Feb. 7, 1935, No. 4002. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to variable-speed gearing of the type in which pairs 1, 1<a>; 2, 2<a> of conical pulleys or toothed bevel wheels are movable axially to vary the speed by rocking-levers 5 pivoted on fulcrum blocks 6. According to the invention, the blocks 6 are movable by springs 12 acting continuously thereon so as to tension the belt 3, means being provided for preventing return movement of the blocks 6 against the spring- pressure. In the arrangement shown, the blocks 6 are mounted on a right-and-left-handed screw 11 which is urged to rotate by the coil spring 12, reverse movement being prevented by the internal friction of the screw. The spring may act through a fusee to compensate for its loss of tension as it returns towards its unstretched condition. In a further modification, the fulcrum-blocks are urged axially by compression springs, reverse movement being prevented by pawls engaging a toothed sleeve through which the spring acts.
