Abstract

Red lead is produced from lower lead oxides, carbonate of lead, or white lead by passing the initial material through a rotary furnace in countercurrent to the heating gases. Longitudinal ribs may be provided in the furnace to effect agitation of the p material, and the heating gases may be brought into direct contact with the material, or be passed through separate closed flues within the furnace. In the latter case, the flues may comprise longitudinal channels in the furnace lining or a pipe running longitudinally through the centre of the furnace. A slowly rotating furnace of considerable length, say 60 feet, is preferably used. Air openings are provided at its lower end, but feeding and discharge are effected through housings connected in an air-tight manner with the furnace. The furnace draught serves to convey any dust or fumes to a dust collector.
