Abstract
476,064. Miners' helmets. BATHGATE, R. A. July 13, 1936, Nos. 19350 and 20839. [Class 63] A helmet for miners and the like has a transparent eye-shield slidably connected thereto so that it can be slid over the front wall of the helmet from an out-of-the-way position to an operative position in front of the eyes of the wearer. The shield 12 may be of mica, non-inflammable celluloid or transparent synthetic resin. Its edges are guided in grooves at the inner edges of metal strips 34 riveted to the front wall of the helmet between the front wall and an outer member 39. Stops 43, secured to the screen, co-operate with stops 42 on the guides to prevent the screen being pulled right out. The member 39 is lined with fabric so that the screen is cleaned as it is moved past the fabric. In a modification, a metal band 48 secured to the screen has bent-over ends engaging guides 46. In another modification, slots 49 in the member 39 guide headed pins secured to the screen. The screen may be of opaque material with spectacle-like insertions of transparent material. According to the Provisional Specifications, the screen may be secured by snap-fasteners, or may be pivoted to the helmet so that it may be moved about its pivot between operative and inoperative positions. Specification 475,803 is referred to.
