[Class 35] [Also in Group XXII] A machine tool has alternative-feed and quick-traversing motions for a tool slide or other part comprising a feed motor 1 connected through gearing 3, friction clutch members 7, 10, and the rotor 8 of the quick-traversing motor 6, to gearing 11 which operates the feed shaft 12. When the motor 6 is started its rotor 8 moves axially against a spring 9, thus separating the clutch members and imparting the rapid traverse movement directly to the gearing 11. The feed motor may then be stopped or allowed to run on and in the latter case the feed recommences when the motor 6 is switched off, the clutch acting as a brake to prevent over-running of the quick-traverse movement.
