Abstract

475,525. Cooling cylinders. DODSON, E. May 22, 1936, No. 14512. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A cowling for aircraft engines includes one or more flaps angularly adjustable thereon and which are constructed so that, when open, their leading edges fit closely on the cowling and, when closed, they form a smooth continuation of the cowling. As shown, the flaps b are pivotally mounted on tubes b<4> mounted in bearings c carried by brackets c<1> c<2> attached to a ring c<3> fixed within the main portion of the cowling a. Each bracket c<1> carries a hydraulic ram d containing a plunger d<1> formed with shoulders d<2> which engage with arms b<5>, b<6> on the adjacent ends of tubes b<4>. The ram d<1> is operated in either direction by the supply of fluid to either of parts d3, d<4>. To prevent loss of fluid due to leakage, passages d<8>, d<9> are connected by a passage d<10> which communicates with a pipe dll which connects all such pipes d<10> and is connected to the exhaust side of the fluid pressure system. Fluid is led to or exhausted from the ram through pipes d<12>, d<13> communicating through a valve e<4> with a supply pipe f and an exhaust pipe f<1>. The valve e<4> is conical and has passages and grooves provided therein such that when either pipe d<12>, d<13> is connected to supply the other pipe is connected to exhaust. The ram moves between adjustable abutments d<6>, d<7>. The flaps are provided with lateral extensions which are formed to act as stops. The valve e<4> may be controlled by hand or by a remote acting, thermostat which includes bellows g<2> connected to a boiler h fitted to the engine, and constructed as described in Specification 449,078. The thermostat actuates the valves through a trip mechanism of the kind described in Specification 341,759, [Group XXVIII]. Changes in atmospheric pressure are compensated for by an aneroid element h<5> connected with the bellows through a lever h<6>. A hand control may be provided to override the manual control.
