Abstract

475,485. Pleating. TATE, F. R. (Paper Service Co.) Feb. 17, 1936, No. 4819. [Class 141] A corrugating-apparatus for producing corrugations in a travelling web in the direction of its travel comprises a set of forming members and a complementary forming member or set of forming members adapted progressively to corrugate a web passed between them, the first mentioned set of forming members or the complementary member or set of members being movable with the web, and some or all of the forming members being of flexible band, rope, wire, or like form, and means which when the apparatus is in use engage the flexible forming members directly at one or more places between the points at which the web enters into, and passes from engagement with the forming members for urging them into operative relation with the complementary forming member or members. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the web 10 is passed between two sets of belts 1, 2, which converge in the direction of travel of the web, and rollers 13 ... 17 engage the belts of each set to urge them between the belts of the other set to a progressively increasing extent. In a modification, one set of belts is replaced by a member having a smooth surface. In a further modification, Figs. 5 and 7, the web is passed between a circumferentially grooved cylinder 20, and a series of belts 27a ..... 27g arranged in echelon formation, the belts being caused to engage the grooves in the cylinder in a successive manner by adjustable pressure rollers 33 .. 33b. In modifications of this arrangement, the grooved cylinder is replaced by a longitudinally grooved plate which may be curved convexly, or by a series of travelling belts. In another modification, the web is passed between a series of travelling belts and a longitudinally grooved plate, the belts being arranged to come successively into operation while they run parallel with each other, after which the belts converge in the direction of travel of the web. Means are also described for crushing the corrugations formed.
