Abstract
474,370. Nonconducting coverings for heat and sound. RICHARDSON, G., and RICHARDSON, A. W. April 24, 1936, No. 11738. [Class 64 (ii)] Sheets of aluminium or other bright metal or alloy 0À05-0À15 mm. thick are pressed out to form cup-like projections on one or both sides, which projections bear on the surface to be insulated or on an intermediate sheet. The metal is preferably hardened by compression. The formation of cups is effected by first drawing the metal from a considerable area around the cup by a suitable tool and die, and then pressing out the cup. A number of such sheets 1, with cups 2 may be used, separated by plane sheets 4, Fig. 3, or in contact with one another, Fig. 6. In the latter case, the cups 3 may be half the height of the cups 2. The sheets may be wrapped around a curved surface. Alternatively, the sheet 1 may be provided with ribs 5, Fig. 11, having a minimum superficial area of crest, and substantially opposite to one another. Such sheets may be arranged in a box-like unit whose side walls 6 are bent over at 7. The ribs are cut near the wall 6, and the short length thus cut is flattened on to the sheet. The ribs on adjacent sheets are arranged at right-angles, or a plane sheet may be inserted between the ribbed sheets. The box-like units thus formed are arranged side-by-side on the surface to be insulated, and may be covered with bitumen or lacquer. The plane separating sheets 4 may be replaced by fibrous sound insulating sheets. Specifications 414,829 and 462,215, (the latter in the Provisional Specification), are referred to.
