Abstract
A coating bath or replenishing liquid for use in a phosphatizing process consists of a solution containing one or more metallic dihydrogen phosphates to which has been added nitric acid in quantity sufficient to avoid the presence of insoluble phosphates formed by hydrolysis. The nitric acid, which may be added before, during, or after the dissolution of the phosphates, reacts with the phosphates to form soluble nitrates, which act as accelerators, and free phosphoric acid which inhibits hydrolysis of the phosphates, and, as an alternative procedure, one or more p soluble metallic nitrates and free phosphoric acid in quantity sufficient to inhibit hydrolysis may be added direct to the solution instead of adding nitric acid. Dihydrogen phosphates of zinc, iron, manganese, calcium, cadmium, and barium may be used in the solution and may, if desired, be formed therein by chemical reaction. Solutions specified are formed by dissolving in water (a) zinc dihydrogen phosphate, nitric acid, and copper carbonate; (b) zinc dihydrogen phosphate, zinc nitrate, phosphoric acid, and copper carbonate. In making solution (a) the nitric acid is mixed with the water prior to or simultaneously with the addition of the phosphate and during the solution of the phosphate the solution is heated to 70-80 DEG C. which is approximately the temperature at which the coating bath is normally used.
