Abstract

<PICT:0473600/IV/1> The strength of thermoplastic filaments, threads, foils, and the like is improved by treating with fluids under pressure by running the material 1 from the outer air into an end chamber 4 containing compressed air or other inert fluid, over a positively driven feed device 5 contained in said chamber, through a communication 6 into a stretching chamber 7 containing steam or hot water above 100 DEG C., if desired, through a third chamber 19 and back into the air, the temperature of the first chamber being maintained substantially below that of the steam or water. The means for controlling the temperature of the first chamber may comprise a jacket 27 through which a cooling liquid is circulated, or a cooling medium may be circulated in pipes within the chamber, or a cooling medium may be sprayed inside the chamber or on to the exterior thereof; the chamber may be finned as at 29 and blackened on the outside to assist radiation. Each chamber is provided with a pressure gauge 12, pressure release valve 13 and steam trap 14. Specifications 443,707 and 443,773 are referred to.
