Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] In the production of photographic pictures by printing a negative image on to a positive light-sensitive emulsion layer, negative and positive emulsion layers are used in at least one of which the gradation curve is steeper in the region of little blackening than in the region of much blackening and in which the range of blackening of the negative material corresponds with the range of intensity of the positive material. The gradation curves may be similar to a parabola or a portion of a hyperbola. The layers may be so chosen that the gamma of the resulting image curve of the shadows and the gamma of the high lights are greater than the gamma of the image curve of the middle tones. A negative produced on an emulsion of which the gradation curve in the region of little blackening is steeper than in the region of much blackening may be printed on a positive emulsion of which the gradation curve in the regions of little and much blackening is steeper than in the middle tones. The layers may be so chosen that the threshold value of the resulting image curve in the various intensity regions remains the same. The emulsions may be prepared as described in Specification 428,305. The gradation curves may be modified by suitable development, clearing, reducing or intensifying.
