Abstract

<PICT:0472600/III/1> In apparatus for drying slurry &c. comprising a rotary structure having spaced parallel coaxial gas-permeable walls 1, 2, bounding a space containing heat-transmitting bodies 6, over which the slurry &c. is spread, the hot drying gases pass radially through the charge of bodies and the retaining walls therefor. The slurry is supplied from an axial pipe 13 and flows in counter-current to the gases which are admitted through a pipe 14 and withdrawn from the apparatus axially through the extension 7 of the inner permeable wall. The dried slurry is rubbed off by the part of the space not filled with the bodies and falls into the pipe 14. Baffles are attached to the enclosing casing 15 to divert the gases away from the empty part of the space containing the filling bodies. In a modification an intermediate permeable wall is arranged between the coaxial walls. The apparatus may be built into the end of a rotary kiln.
