Abstract

471,913. Secret transmission. TELEFUNKEN GES. FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE. March 12, 1936, No. 7522. Convention date, March 12, 1935. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A system for secret telephony comprises a cathode - ray tube R, Fig. 2, provided with a mosaic electrode S and with two electron guns each of which comprises an indirectly-heated cathode 7, modulating electrode 6 and anode 5. Anodes 4 collect the secondary electrons on the respective sides of the mosaic. The potentials for the various electrodes are obtained through resistances 9 .. 12 from a potentiometer 8, a point of which, together with the common electrode of the mosaic S, is earthed. The mosaic S, Fig. 3, comprises two elliptical or circular parts which are fitted with insulated elements emitting secondary electrons, and are joined by insulating members 22. Speech signals from a microphone 14 are amplified at 15 and applied across a resistance 13 so as to be superposed on the potential of a control electrode 6. Charges are formed by the controlled beam on the electrodes of the mosaic which is subsequently scanned by the beam 20 of constant intensity. A voltage which varies in dependence upon the original speech signals will he produced across the resistance 11 and may be amplified and transmitted. The rays may be adapted to scan the mosaic in opposite directions, preferably crossing at the insulating members 22, so that an inversion of the speech signal is obtained. Further, the rays may be adapted to pass rapidly over the members 22 so that only supersonic interruption occurs. The rays are deflected to scan the mosaic by electrostatic means or by pairs of magnetic members 18, 19 which are connected to independent generators 16, 17. The above arrangement can be used in telegraph systems.
