Abstract
470,693. Sewing machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.) March 10, 1937, No. 7011. [Class 112] The reciprocating needle of a sewing-machine for sewing straw braid, is provided with a stroke-varying element which can be secured in its adjusted position, and the support for the loop-taker co-operating with the needle is adjusted by means yieldingly connected to the needle-stroke varying element. The main shaft 5 in the bed 1 is connected by the crank 6 and pitman 7 to the ball 8 at the end of rod 9 which slides in the fulcrum guide sleeve 10 with projecting studs journalled in slide blocks 13 working in guideways in the bed. The forward end of the rod 9 is connected by a pivot pin 16 to the lower end of an elbow shaped arm 17 rigid with the needle bar 18 which carries the hook needle 20 and eye pointed needle 21. One of the slide blocks 13 is connected by a link 26 to an arm 27 which can be adjusted by a hand operated lever 33 to vary the position of the fulcrum 10 and thereby vary the upper limit of the needle stroke to suit the thickness of the work. The lever 33 is held in its adjusted position by a spring-pressed locking pin entering one of the apertures 35. The loopers 37, 38 are mounted on the levers 40, 42 which operate as described in Specification 451,567. Mechanism is provided so that the operation of the lever 33 determines the operative elevation of the slide 39 carrying the loopers. A weak spring restores the slide 39 to its normal sewing position after its displacement by the presser foot being raised for the insertion of work. The bar 63 with the presser foot 64 has an arm 67 carrying a roller 68 engaged by the cam lever 69. The hole 71 in the lug 70 on the arm 67 receives the end of a cantilever spring 72 which can be adjusted by the screw 76. The presser foot has a small movement independent of the slide 39 but a shoulder 77 engages and lifts the slide when the cam lever 69 is operated.
