Abstract
Alkali metal metaphosphates, for instance the sodium or potassium salts, are freed from impurities such as iron, aluminium, chromium, or vanadium, by treating their solutions with a soluble alkaline compound such as caustic soda, and filtering off the precipitate formed. Slight excess of the alkali is preferably used, but insufficient to redissolve any aluminia precipitated. The purified solution may be evaporated to dryness and ignited. The metaphosphate may be obtained from a solution of phosphatic material in sulphuric acid by adding sodium hydroxide or carbonate to form a solution of sodium dihydrogen phosphate and precipitate a portion of the impurities, filtering the solution and evaporating it to dryness, and fusing the residue; or the sulphuric acid solution may be so concentrated that on addition of sodium hydroxide &c. the dihydrogen phosphate is precipitated in the solid form which is heated and fused without separation of any impurities.
