Abstract
469,404. Cathode-ray tubes. WILLIAMS, W. E. Jan. 23, 1936, No. 2207. [Class 39 (i)] In discharge tubes with an electron beam the electron density at any point of which is representative of the brightness of a corresponding optical image, the beam undergoes impacts with a series of wire grids emitting secondary electrons and so oriented that the lines in the pattern introduced into the electron image by the wires of one grid lie in directions inclined, for example, at 45‹ to the wires of the next grid. Successive grids may be closely adjacent or spaced apart with electron lenses between them. An optical image of an object 21 is thrown on a photo-electric cathode 23 in the evacuated vessel 24 containing secondary emitting grids 26, 27, 29, 30, 32. Electrostatic lenses 25, 28, 31 are provided between each pair of grids or as shown between alternate pairs. More than two closely adjacent grids may be used and grids may also be mounted adjacent to the cathode 23. When the final electron image is magnetically deflected in space to produce scanning and television signals, the final grid is of magnetic material to screen the electrons striking it from the magnetic fields. The other grids are of silver or silver coated with alkaline metal such as caesium or potassium.
