Abstract

A cleanser for glass, stone-work, brickwork, and oil, varnish, or enamel coatings consists of dilute hydrofluoric acid and one or more or the following substances which retard the drying of the acid solution: phosphoric acid, a cellulose derivative, e.g. methyl cellulose, soluble or capable of swelling in water, sugar, molasses, or glycol, glycerine, or other polyhydric alcohol. There may be added: a wetting agent, e.g. an alkylnaphthalene sulphonic acid or sulphonate, sulphite cellulose lye, or higher fatty alcohol; and a substance reducing the action of the acid on window-frames or other metal parts; suitable substances are crude anthracene, acid resins, diphenyl sulphoxide, quinoline compounds, albuminous compounds, and metal salts. Example: 1 lb. of 71--75 per cent acid is dissolved in 5--6 lb. of water, and there are added 0,1 lb. of glycerine, 0,1 lb. of diphenyl-sulphoxide, and 0,1 lb. of oleyl-methyl-taurine sodium salt as wetting agent; the solution is sprayed on to the window panes or the stone building, and after some time removed by a brush or a water jet.
