[Class 40 (iv)] An electromagnetic device for a loud-speaker or a phonographic recorder or reproducer comprises a moving permanent magnet 1 of tubular form of which the ends are surrounded by coils 2, 3, to which the speech currents are fed, and a soft-iron ring 4 for increasing the field intensity in the coils and for deflecting the lines of force, so that they lie approximately in planes parallel to the coil turns. The magnet 1, which is attached by a rod 5 to the apex of a conical diaphragm 6, may be a solid of revolution with recessed ends, Fig. 2 (not shown), and is made of a magnetic alloy having a B-H maximum value greater than 10<6>, c.g.s. units, e.g. a nickel, cobalt, aluminium or titanium alloy.
