468,723. Making bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., BATE, J., and MELHUISH, M. March 24, 1936, No. 8772. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Flanging.-A bearing shell or liner is formed from a single metal or bi-metal blank by indenting or grooving the metal along the zones where the flanges will join the body of the shell or liner, bending the blank to U- shape, and forming flanges on the side margins of the U-shaped piece by a press which acts first on the horns of the U-form, and finally on the apex of the flanges. The flanging process described in Specification 442,468 may be employed. Grooves 2 are formed in a blank 1, Fig. 3, and the blank is bent into a shell 4, Fig. 4, with flanges 3. Indentations 7, Fig. 7, are formed in a blank 1 before bending and flanging. The processes are applicable to bi-metallic blanks. A blank 5, 6, Fig. 9, is formed, by a combination of these processes, with grooves 2 and indentations 7. A composite blank comprises a layer of white metal, such as a cadmium alloy, or lead-bronze, on a backing of brass, bronze, or steel. The grooves or indentations may be formed by rolling, pressing, stamping, or machining, such as milling, and may be formed in a continuous strip which is subsequently cut into lengths to form blanks.
