Abstract

536,414. Making compound bearings. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 12, 1939, No. 27704. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1938. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Angular beading ; die-rolling :-A bearing is formed by a matrix 14 consisting of copper, silver, or a moderate antifriction alloy thereof capable of supporting heavy loads having regularly disposed spaced indentations 44 filled with soft bearing metal of good antifrictional properties such as babbit consisting of 95 per cent lead and 5 per cent tin. The indentations 44 preferably do not extend completely through the matrix, the rear surface of which may be thermally bonded to a steel back 12. The bearing may be made by thermally bonding the copper or other lead bearing material to the steel back by pouring molten copper on the steel back or byepassing steel strip through a reservoir containing molten copper in a non-oxidising atmosphere and subsequently either pressing the bimetallic strip to the matrix form between dies or passing it as shown in Fig. 9, between rolls 22, 24 into contact with a die 26 shaped to give the desired curvature. The matrix is next coated with a flux and molten bearing material applied. The bearing is then machined to its final dimension, portions of the matrix 3 being exposed. Automobile bearings may have a babbit thickness of from 0.005 inch to 0.010 inch with a maximum grid thickness of 0.034 inch secured to a steel back of 0.016 inch thickness. The exposed surfaces of the bearing surfaces may be in the ratio of 60 40, either surface predominating. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, states that the copper, silver, or like bearing surface may be formed with longitudinal or spiral ribs and the spaces between the ribs filled with soft metal, when the bearing is cylindrical the ridges may be formed by drawing a broach through a cylindrical blank, or spiral grooves may be cut in the blank by a lathe. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
