[Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XIII] A rotary drum for drying, cooling, or calcining purposes comprises a shell s provided with heattransfer members a of substantially H- section, the flanges of which provide shelving over which the material to be treated passes in thin layers. The shelving is provided with spaced fins g which are positioned transversely to the direction of travel of the material through the drum, and project above the surface of the material to deflect the air passing through the drum. The members a are preferably arranged in staggered relationship, and the flanges instead of being parallel to each other may be flared outwardly. The members may be secured to the shell s by supports e or f.
