[Class 13] [Also in Group XXVI] A hooter utilizing steam or compressed air comprises two mechanical oscillating devices coupled together, one of which is connected to the device producing the sound vibrations and is brought into oscillation by the steam or air, whilst the other controls the steam or air supply to or exhaust from the first oscillating device. As shown, a piston K, oscillating in a brass-lined cylinder Z, is coupled by a spring F1 to a diaphragm T associated with a horn Tr. The second oscillating device Sz, Fk, which controls the steam or air supply to or exhaust from the cylinder, is connected to the piston by the spring Fk and is arranged to vibrate 90‹ out of phase with the piston. In addition, the piston K oscillates a valve S which also controls the supply of steam or compressed air to the cylinder Z. The diaphragm T may be dished or conical and in conjunction with the spring F1 and piston K may be tuned to a definite frequency, e.g. 75 cycles per sec. The spring F1 may be replaced by a cranked torsion shaft.
