Abstract

Momentum apparatus.-Relates to means for imparting rapid oscillations to mechanical systems such as the water-raising devices described in Specification 130,332, and consists in providing an elastic attachment between the part to be oscillated and the stationary base and in utilizing the inertia of an auxiliary mass oscillated by the motor to cause oscillations in the said part. Fig. 1 shows the invention as applied to a device for raising water described in the earlier Specification. The pipe a is secured by a spring d to a fixture e, and pivoted to it at i is a lever f carrying a weight g which is oscillated by a motor &c. connected to the lever at h. In starting the motor, the weight g alone is oscillated, but when the frequency of the oscillations of the weight g becomes that natural to the pipe a the latter also is oscillated. The spring d may take various forms other than that shown, and the lever may be oscillated by the motor in various ways, e.g. by a crank p<1> as shown in Fig. 7. In modifications, the pipe a is connected directly to the piston or cylinder of a fluid-pressure motor, or a motor may be carried on the pipe. Fig. 11 shows an apparatus for giving the lever f a number of oscillations driving one revolution of a hand or motor-driven shaft x<1>.
