Abstract

188,633. Schieferstein, G. H. Nov. 10, 1921, [Convention date]. Machinery, utilizing inertia to obtain movements in.-Reflates to means for the transmission of power or energy through mechanically oscillating systems, stated to be applicable for driving a hammer or a noiseless clock and for the transmission of power from internal-combustion and steam engines, crank drives or reciprocating masses. According to the invention, a mechanical system adapted to oscillate with variable amplitude but with a constant and pronounced natural frequency is driven from a driving system of frequency approximately in tune therewith through an elastic intermediate member adapted to the energy to be transmitted. The escalating system consists essentially of an elastically constrained mass the movements of which under the action of the driver and intermediate elastic member gradually increase from zero to a maximum amplitude. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the oscillatory system comprises a shaft or member a reciprocable in bearings c and constrained by a spring b held between fixed parts d. It is driven by a cram g, connecting rod h and slider i acting through a spring k. The movements of the member a may be transmitted to a second oscillatory system as shown in Fig. 2, in which the second shaft or member a<1> is constrained by spring b' fixed at d'. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the intermediate. elastic member comprises a piston i<1> working in a closed cylinder k<1> which, constrained between springs b, constitutes the oscillatory system. In an alternative form, the cylinder k<1> itself works as a piston inside another olc-sed cylinder. Means for measuring the work or the efficiency of the device are, shown in Fig. 5. The shaft a, constrained by the spring b and driven through the elastic intermediate member k by the crank g, is provided with arms t carrying a rod s with a pencil q<1> by which a record of the movements is obtained on a moving paper strip. A brake block p is also mounted on the shaft a between springs r, r<1>, and is adapted to be adjustably pressed against the shaft. The brake block moves with the shaft until its grip thereon is overcome by the compression of one of the springs, r, r<1>. The movements of the brake block are recorded by means of a second pencil q. Instead of a mechanical elastic intermediate connection, an oscillating surface may produce oscillations in the air which are transmitted to adjacent surfaces. Reference is also made to an arrangement whereby the intermediate elastic member only acts in one direction. Reference has been directed by the Comp. troller to Specifications 2857/02, [Class 139, Watches &c.], 12438/14, [Class 7 (ii), Internalcombustion engines,' Arrangement &c. of], and 146,436, [Class 80 (iii), Link-work &c.].
