Abstract
467,445. Finishing edges of leather &c. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Dec. 17, 1935, No. 34982. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1934. [Class 42 (i)] [Also in Group XVI] A process for the finishing of sheets of artificial leather and other composite materials comprising a textile base coated or impregnated with a thermoplastic composition, consists in subjecting the sheets to an embossing operation along the edge whereby a false selvedge is produced. The embossing operation preferably is carried out while the thermoplastic component of the material is in a softened state. For this purpose the embossing members may be heated, or the material may be softened before coming into contact with the embossing members. The material between the false selvedge and true selvedge is trimmed off after the embossing operation. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises an embossing roll 1 and a coacting plain or patterned roll. At the ends of the roll are knurled selvedge-forming rings 11 which may be integral with or connected to the roll 1. In a recess 12 in one or each of the rings 11 is mounted a numberembossing device 15 for stamping length indicating markings on the material. The discs 11 may also be adapted to emboss a trade name or the like. Specifications 428,456, [Group III], 440,767, 441,622, and 466,490 are referred to.
