Abstract
<PICT:0466374/III/1> <PICT:0466374/III/2> Water which is to be used for the production of lime water is previously treated with sufficient lime water to neutralize the free or partially bound carbon dioxide and passed over material which accelerates the neutralization reaction. As shown in Fig. 1 lime water drawn from a vessel 1 through an outlet 3 and valve 6 by a pump 5 is added to water flowing through a pipe 2. The water is passed successively through a vessel 7, containing quartz, calcite, argonite, silicate of calcium or magnesium or other material which will promote the precipitation of calcium carbonate, and through the vessel 1 containing milk of lime. The main portion of the lime water leaves through an outlet 4. Fig. 2 shows a similar arrangement comprising a vessel 13 containing pieces of lime supported on a perforated false bottom 12, through which the water passes downward.
