Abstract
465,198. Perforating glass, &c. SHEARMAN, C. H. HOWLAND-. July 27, 1935, No. 21433. Convention date, July 27, 1934. [Classes 56 and 124] [Also in Groups XXII and VIII] Substances such as double-ground glass can be punched or perforated when cold by subjecting the material to an intense pressure with the tool in contact with the work, increasing the pressure by a very large pressure applied at a low initial speed and increasing the speed smoothly by infinitely small increments throughout the working stroke. The speed of application of the pressure increases by amounts having a parabolic relation to the working stroke of the tool. In the Figure is shown diagrammatically the operation on the work piece 11, preoperative pressure being applied by clamping means 12, 13 all around the hole to be punched. The tool 14 then applies an intense pressure at low initial speed increasing as stated above. The apparatus employed may be that described in Specification 465,197, [Group XXII]. Specification 465,196, [Group XXII], also is referred to.
