Abstract
464,535. Casting stereotypes. POLTER, H. April 17, 1936, No. 11057. [Class 100 (ii)] In a, machine for casting flat stereotypes of the kind in which the mould and melting- pot are tilted for casting purposes, the matrix clamp and the part of the lower plate of the mould and the edge of the pot are constructed with thin walls and stiffening-ribs, and the hollow spaces are filled with heat-insulating material so as to prevent premature cooling of the plate at this point. The melting-pot 9 is carried by a plate 1 mounted on pivots 2 and formed with an aperture 10 for the passage of molten metal and a recess for the reception of the matrix. The matrix is held in place by an angle-bar 19 secured to a member formed by two box-like elements 15, 16 filled with a heat-insulating material such as asbestos or kieselguhr. The upper element is formed with thin walls and stiffening ribs 18, and the member is secured with the interposition of a heat-insulating plate 20, to a bar 21 carried by pivoted arms 12 and mounted in a recess in the plate 1. The bar 21 is formed with a slight longitudinal concavity on the upper surface, but the heat of the molten metal causes the element 16 and clip 19 to expand and lie flat. The part 24 of the plate 1 lying between the aperture 10 and the matrix clip is also formed with thin walls strengthened by ribs 25 and filled with heatinsulating material. The parts are so arranged that the heating-gases for the pot pass over the parts of the plate 1 adjacent to the matrix clip; alternatively, independently controlled electric heating-elements are provided. The upper plate 7 of the mould is secured to the plate 1 by means of a hinge 4, 5, 6, the pivot 4 being arranged slightly above the surface of the plate 1 to facilitate adjustment for the thickness of the plate to be cast. The weight of the upper plate is partly counterbalanced by a weight or an adjustable spring 36 connected to a lever 31 pivoted on the plate 1 and engaging a pin 33 mounted on the plate 7 between the centre of gravity line and the free end of the plate.
