WILLIAM HAIG RAMAGE, OIF GIRARD, OHIO, A SSIGNOR TO VALLEY MOULD AND IRON CORPORATION, OF SHARPSVILL'E, PENNSYLVANIA, A- CORPOR-ATION OF NEW YORK.
APPARATUS FOR CASTING INGOT MOLDS Ann THE ILIKE.
Application filed May 13,
This invention relates broadly to metallurgy and more especially to improvements in apparatus for casting ingots molds andill similar to'that disclosed in the said Perry patent with the exception that the stripping plate is constructed to present a very narrow edge to the matrix wall and is arranged and constructed so that expansion of the inner edge of the plate does not cause warping. Furthermore, the bottom of the matrix comprises a sand surface which leads up to the sand wall on the corebar.
in this new set-up substantially no chilling occurs on the bottom of the casting because a substantially continuous sand surface forms the matrix wall.
as will prevent a flow of hot molten metal into these slots in case the same is not filled tion preferably is provided with a tapered inner edge portion so that a cross section thereof is wedge-shaped. In order to avoid wrinkling orwarpiug when thcinner edge is heated, the stripping plate preferably is provided with narrow slits or slots extending inwardly preferably at right angles tothe'edge of the plate; thereby dividing the thin exposed edgeof the stripping plate into a plurality of sections, each of which is capable ofa slight linear expansion withoutwarping the metal in the plate when the set-up is filled with molten metal. The slots are preferably of such narrowwidth drawings like characters are used to represent like parts.
I Figure 1 is a plan view of a pair of strip ping plates inaccordance with the present invention shown detached from the fiask'to which the plates are adapted to be secured.
Figure 21s a perspective detail view of one portion ofone of-the plates;
Figure 3 illustrates a, vertical section I means well known in the art.
The stripping plate 'in the present inven ping plate for use in casting 1926. Serial No. 108.816.
through the set-up of a stool, corebar, stripping plates and flask in accordance with the present invention. Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the flask 1 is preferably formed of sections which may be secured together by This flask carries secured to the bottom flange 2, stripping plate sections 4 and 5 which are adapted to beremovably, at the same time. securely, attached to the fiaskiso that the stripping plates need only be removed in case of change or-repair. .These stripping plates are adapted to support a sand wallG in the flask andto form guides for centering the flask over the mold pattern when the flask is being rammed. The plates comprise flatportions 7 and beveled Stripping inneredges 8. The edges are slotted at 9 plates to expand when'heated,
in which is mounted a core .bar 11 having a sand rammed surface and with the'base 12 of the core bar provided with a circularpan adapted to carry a ring 14 of mold sand which forms the bottom .wall of thematrix of the set-up" The edges 15 of the base 12 extend beneath the stripping plates 4 and 5' so that the weight of theflask acting on the edges 15 securely positions the core bar in the center of the flask. Suitable key bolts 16 may be provided to position the flask on the stool and to hold the parts in position during pouring operations.
.'.From the foregoing, it will be observed that substantially the entire matrix wall of theset-up is a sand face and with only a very narrow edge of the stripping plate being exposed to'the hot molten metal. This narrow edge quickly thickens to a plate of such size as to rapidly carry away such heat as is'transmitted to the edge and the slots in the edge prevent warping of the stripping Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim is:
and haviu the inner edge of said plate comprising indi'gid- 1. As an article'of manufacture, a strip-.
ualized portions adapted to expand without warping when heated. v
2. As an article of manufacture, a strip ping plate for use in casting and having the 1 a metal stripping plate for use in casting ingot molds, the inner edge of said stripping plate being slottedto permit said edge to expand and contract under influence of heat and cold without warpin said plate, and with the inner edge of said plate being thinner than the outer portion of said plate.
5. As an article of manufacture, a stripping plate for use incasting, said stripping plate bei'ng'adapted to be attached to aflask and support the bottom of a sand Wall in said flask, the sand supporting p01- tion of said plate being inclined, and ,provided with slots to permit expansion of the said supporting edge without warping said plate. It

ping plate for use in casting, said stripping plate being adapted to be attached to a flask and support the'bottom of a sand wall in said flask, the sand'supporting portion of said plate being inclined in ardly, and provided with slots leading into the body of said plate remote from intense heat when,
the device is in use to permit expansion of 7. A set-up for casting ingot molds comprising a flask carrying a wall of sand, :1 core bar, a stool for supporting said core bar, and a stripping plate on the bottom of said flask and adapted to support the lower portion of a sand wall within said flask, the sand supporting portion of said stripping plate being beveled inwardly, said support- "the sand supportingedge without warping said plate.
ing portion of said strip being constructed to expand without warping when heated.
8. A set-up for easting ingot molds com prising in combinationa flask provided with a sand-wall facing, a strippingplate adapted to support the bottom portion of said facing and to expose a thin metal edge beneath said face, a sand covered 'core bar, and a.
sand supporting member adapted to support a layer of sand between said metal edge and said-eore bar to comprise the bottom of the ILLIAM HAIGIRAMAGE.
