SET-UP AND CORE BAR FOR CASTING INGOT MOLDS.

The present invention relates to metallurgy and more particularly to a set-up and core bar for casting ingot molds.
The present invention relates more espe- 5 cially to-a set-up and core bar for casting closed bottom ingot molds which-have heretofore been cast with the bottom of the mold comprising the uppermost portlon of the casting. The result of casting closed bottom ingot molds in this way has been molds w th rough and uneven bottoms, becauseduring the casting operation, the mpurities and kish rise to the top. It was therefore, necessary heretofore to machine the ends of these ingot molds in order that they might set securely and properly on the casting floor. Furthermore, this prior met hod of casting the mold in inverted posltion caused the oorest and most spongy part of the metal in the mold to be in that part WlllGh formed the uppermost portion of the casting and which comprised the bottom of the ingot mold when inuse. The bottom of an ingot mold is subjected to most severe conditions when the ingot mold is in use and therefore it is particularly desirable that good solid metal shall comprise the bottom of such molds. Furthermore, the bottom of an ingot mold receives the direct and full force of the stream of molten steel which initially enters the mold and soft metal 13 very liable to be quickly cut away, so that the mold having a soft metal bottom be-. comes useless after a relatively few number of heats.
The present invention overcomes the difliculties of the known art by providing a setup in Which the ingot mold is cast in such mannerthat the bottom of the ingot mold is the bottom of the casting, and the set-up is arranged to provide a smooth chilled surface on the bottom of the ingot mold thereby obviating machining. The core bar usedin this set-up is also constructed in such man- 5 ner as to chill the lowermost portion of the matrix of the ingot mold and thereby form a hard chilled smooth surface in the lower most portion of the matrix of the ingot mold, thereby largely overcoming the cut- .50 ting of the mold by molten steel when the mold is in use. Furthermore, the core'bar in the set-up is supported upon av removable chill plug in such manner that the stripping. opening of the ingot mold, as well as the matrix walls adjacent thereto, are chilled, thus preventing the tendency of the corners of the stripping plug opening to burn away when the mold is in use.
The foregoing points to a few of the advantages and purposes of the present inv'ention; but other and further advantages will in part be obvious and will in art be pointed out hereinafter in the speci cation, by reference to the accompan 'ng drawings, formmg a part thereof. 1 is realized, however, that the present invention may be embodied in structures other than the spec1fic f0rms disclosed herewith, and ma carried out by specific methods which differ from those herein claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. Therefore, the disclosure herewith is to be considered as illustrative and not in the limiting sense.
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevational view through, the preferred form of set-up for carrying out the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on,
base 1 adapted to support a flask 2. The flask may be of the usual sectional type and provided with lower flanges 4 and upper flanges 5. This flask preferably carries a sand wall 6 which may be tapered as" desired to give a slight taper to the outside wall of the ingot mold. The face 7 of the base 1, comprising the bottom of the matrix of the set-up between the sand walls, preferably is smooth cast iron, or the like, in order to provide a chill which will produce a hard smooth surface on the base of an ingot mold cast in the set-up. The central part of the base may be provided with an opening 8 type, is provided with a. metal foot 16 which. is constructed with the recess to fit the in- 2, the set-up therein disclosedcomprises a adapted to receive and position a projection clined portion 14 of the chill plug 10 and to form a metal to metal joint with the supporting shoulder 12 to also obviate the formation of the fins by preventing any molten metal entering at the junction of these two' parts. The metal foot 16 comprises a chill adapted to form a hard smooth surface in the bottom 01' the matrix of the ingot mold cast in this set-up. This metal foot 16 also comprises a supporting shelf, as at 17, which holds up the lower part of the sand wall 18 that is carried by the major portion of the? core bar 15. Y
The flask sections 2 are definitely positioned on the base 1 by means of taper pins 19 which pass through, openings in the lower flanges 4 and in the marginal part of the base 1. The opening 8 in the central part of the base definitely positions the chill plug 1.0 which in turn correctly centers the metal foot 16 on the core bar 15 so that the entire bottom portion of the set-up is accurately and definitely positioned to secure uniformity of thickness of metal in the several side walls of the ingot mold to be cast in the setup. A spider 20 is provided with dowel pins 21 which fit into openings in the upper anges 5, thereby definltely positioning the spider over the flask. The center of the spider is provided with a bearing 22 which accurately fits a head 24 on the upper end of the core bar 15. A locking key 25 is adapted to be driven through the head 24 of the core bar and over the. bearing 22 of the spider, thereby locking the spider and core bar together during the casting operations. The locking key may be omitted if desired. When the core bar is to be stripped from the cast mold, the locking key is driven out, the spider removedand the 'core bar collapsed and withdrawn from the mold. The spider is shown as being held in position on the flask by means of C-clamps 26, but it is to be understood that these clamps may be used or not as is desired. When the spider is in position on the flask the upper end of the core bar is also definitely and accurately centered, so that the whole set-up is locked in positive definite relation, thereby producing accurately formed ingot molds.
The materi is used in the stool. the flask, the spider, the core bar, etc., are those materials commonly used in the art and for the most part may comprise cast iron, parts.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A set-up for casting ingot molds comprising a sand walled flask. a stool having a chill face, a core having sand side Walls and a chill foot below the side walls of the core, and means to support and center the core on the stool.
'2. A set-up for casting ingot molds comprising a sand walled flask. a stool having a chill face, a core having sand side walls'and a chill foot below the side walls of the, core,
and separate chill means to support and center the core on the stool'and form metal to metal joints with thestool and with said foot on the core. I
3. A set-up for castingingot molds comprising a sand walled flask, a stool having a smooth chill face, means to center the flask over the stool, a core having a chill member on the lower end to form a smooth chill surface to the bottom of the matrix of the ingot mold cast in the set-up, and means to center the core over the stool.
4. A set-up for casting ingot molds comprising a flask, a stool for supporting the .flaslg'means to .securely center the flask on the stool, a core bar, a chill foot on said core bar, and means to support said chill foot above said stool to cause said foot to form a smooth chilled portion in the bottom of the ingot mold cast in said set-up.
5. A set-up forcasting ingot molds comprising a flask carrying sand side walls, a stool for supporting the flask, means to se curely center the flask on the stool, a core bar carrying said side walls, a chill foot on said core bar, said foot being adapted to support the lower portion of the sand side walls on the core bar, andmeans to support said chill foot above said stool to cause said foot to form a smooth chilled portion in the bottom of the ingot mold cast in said set-up.

9. A set-up for casting closed bottom ingot molds comprisinga flask, a stool, a core with a lower end adapted to form the bottom of the matrix of an ingot mold. cast in the setup, and means to support said core within said flask and with the lower end adjacent to and separated from the said stool.
10. As an article of manufacture, a core for casting in upright position closed bottom ingot molds, said core having sand side walls and a finished metal lower end adapted to form the matrix portion of an ingot mold cast by using said core..
11. As an article of manufacture, a core bar for casting closed bottom ingot molds, said core comprising collapsible side portions adapted to carry sand walls, a chill foot adapted to come into directcontact with molten metal in the casting of an ingot mold and to chill the bottom portion of the matrix of an ingot mold cast with said core bar.
12. As an article of manufacture, a core bar for use in casting closed bottom ingot molds comprising collapsible sand supporting side walls, and a chilled foot having curved surfaces thereon to form the bottom of the matrix of an ingot mold cast with said core bar.
13. As an article of manufacture, a. core bar for use in casting closed bottom ingot molds comprising collapsible sand supporting side walls, and a chilled foot having curved surfaces thereon to form the bottom of the matrix of an ingot mold cast with said core bar, said foot being constructed to support the lower portion of the said sand side walls.
14. In a set-up for casting closed bottom ingot molds in normal upright position, the combination of a stool, a sand Walled flask set onsaid stool, means to accurately center said flask upon said stool, .a core member provided with sanded side walls tapering upwardly and outwardly, means to center the lower end of said core member within the lower portion of the matrix of the sand walled flask and with, the lower end of the core member spaced apart from said stool, and centering means for the upper end'of said core membercomprising a supporting member engaging the upper end of the core member and securely attached to the upper end of said flask to center the upper end of said core member within the upper portion of the matrix of said sand walled flask.
