Abstract
464,425. Metal - heating furnaces. MALAM, J. E., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 17, 1935, No. 28756. [Class 51 (ii)] Metal strip, sheet, or wire to be annealed or otherwise heat-treated is passed through a preheating-zone in which it is rapidly raised to the treatment temperature by the combustion of a suitable fuel, and is then passed through a zone in which the treatment temperature is maintained by electrical heating- elements. As shown the preheating-chamber 1, which is short compared with the annealing- chamber 2, is heated by rows of gas burners 8 beneath the strip 3, and by side wall burners 14 above the strip. Refractory bars 9 are arranged between the bars of burners. The products of combustion are exhausted by a fan 25, and the communicating opening 19 between the chambers is made as small as possible to minimize flow of gases into the annealing-zone. The strip passes through the chamber 2 over a series of simultaneously driven rollers 20. A modified form of preheating-chamber adapted for use with an existing electric furnace has burners below the strip only.
