Abstract
463,990. Treating sewage. PORTEOUS, W. K. Nov. 5, 1935, No. 30600. [Class 111] Receptacles 11, 12, in which sewage sludge is heated, have valved pipe connections so that while a charge of sludge is being heated in one of the receptacles, sludge in the other, which has been previously heated, can be circulated by a pump 22 through a heat-interchanger 15, where it is cooled by sludge circulated through the interchanger by a pump 21 from a receptacle 16. The cooled sludge is discharged by the pump 22 to settling vessels 18, 19, from which the separated solid is passed to a filter-press 20. The emptied receptacle 11 or 12 is refilled with warmed sludge from the receptacle 16. Modified apparatus is described in which the sludge on its way from the settling vessels is retained in receptacles from which it is circulated through heat-interchangers through which sludge on its way to the receptacle 16 is also circulated.
