Abstract

The heating means of a vacuum pan <PICT:0463833/III/1> <PICT:0463833/III/2> comprises superposed pairs of inlet and outlet headers 2, 3 respectively, each pair being disposed diametrically of the pan and connected by means of arcuate steam tubes 4 arranged concentrically with the pan. Each header is attached as a cantilever at its outer end to the wall of the pan. A central hollow shaft 5 carries stirrers 6 operating above, below and intermediate to the set of tube elements. The stirrers may be shaped to propel the liquid contents downwardly near the centre of the pan and upwardly through the outer zone simultaneously. Cold water circulating tubes 15 carried by the shaft 5 are arranged adjacent to the periphery of the circular path swept out by the stirrers, cooling liquid being fed thereto and returned therefrom through conduits formed in the shaft by means of a diametrical partition therein. In modifications of the invention, the pan is provided with a calandria or a coil arranged in the base of the pan, and the arcuate steam tubes are arranged in groups of three.
