Abstract

463,796. Rack -and - pinion gearing. MARSHALL, L., and RUSTON-BUCYRUS, Ltd. Sept. 5, 1935, No. 24720. [Class 80 (i)] In rack-and-pinion gearing of the type in which the rack moves between predetermined limits, the rack carries a buffer which engages an abutment at the end of the travel of the rack and shock is absorbed by relative movement between the rack and the thrust member of the buffer.' In the form shown, the rack b, which operates the dipper arm a of an excavating machine, has a reduced end portion b<1> carrying a slidable piece f having a boss j bearing on a spring k contained in a casing m on the arm a. When the arm a moves to the right to its extreme position, the piece f abuts against the shrouds h on the driving pinion c and is stopped, but the arm a, rack b and the casing m of the spring k continue to move until the spring is compressed, so that these parts are gradually brought to rest. Instead of the spring k, a buffer comprising layers or discs of rubber or metal may be employed.
