Abstract

463,568. Hydraulic transmission of power. SMITHSON & CO., Ltd., J. G., and SMITHSON, J. G. Oct. 4,1935, Nos. 27418/35 and 18230/36. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXVII and XXVIII] An electric circuit cam-shaft controller is operated by a piston g working in a cylinder h against a spring 6, liquid being forced into the cylinder from a reservoir p by means of a plunger pump l driven by an electric motor k. The controller comprises cams c mounted on a shaft b and co-operating with rollers 4 on switch arms, the cams being formed with abruptly curved parts 3. With the pump l working, and an electromagnet y energized to close a byepass valve x, the piston g is operated until the part 3 of a cam c engages its roller 4, whereupon the movement of the piston g is arrested, and pressure built up in a chamber t which contains-a spring-pressed piston u and is in communication with the passage i leading from the reservoir p to the cylinder h. When sufficient pressure has been built up it overcomes the resistance offered by the cam c and the roller 4, and effects a relatively rapid movement of the piston g and a quick step movement of the controller. The operation is repeated for each step movement of the controller. An adjustable stop 8 may be provided for the piston u. To effect a return movement of the controller the electromagnet y is deenergized to open the valve x and permit the spring 6 to return the piston. The stepmovement of the controller may be arrested by stopping the motor k, and the motor k may be stopped by a switch operated when the piston g has moved its full amount. The speed of the pump l may be varied or an adjustable valve may be provided in the passage i. The plunger pump may alternatively be operated by hand or foot.
