Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a seamless can forming apparatus having an actuating piston 94 mounted in a closed fluid circuit and reciprocated to and fro by a reciprocating driving member 72 located in the fluid circuit to pass purches 98 attached to each side of the piston 94 through associated dies 250 upon each alternate stroke of the piston 94, lost fluid in a portion of the fluid circuit causing overstroking of a punch 98 is replaced from a control chamber 126, 126<SP>1</SP> to re-establish correct stroking of the piston 94. The driving member 72 includes a shaft 74 connected to a pair of crank arms 76 disposed on driven journals 78. As the shaft 74 is rotated, slides 82 are moved up and down and a yoke 84 is reciprocated to and fro to alternately force fluid against the opposing sides of the piston 94. If the piston 94 overtravels to the left due to fluid leakage from the chamber 90, a switch LS 3 is tripped by a contact X on a right hand punch 98. A solenoid 2 is energized to connect ports A and C through valve 130 so that air from line 135 is caused to move a piston 128 in the chamber 126 to force fluid therefrom, past a valve 124 and into the bottom of chamber 90 to replace the lost fluid. The fluid from the chamber 126 is also caused to flow through line 138, valve 140 and lines 160, 112, 114, 116, 118 into the bearings of the driving member 72, which is continuously lubricated by fluid during operation of the apparatus. At the end of the stroke of the piston 128, a switch LS 2 is opened to de-energize solenoid 2 and return the valve 130 to the neutral position whereupon the piston 128 is retracted and the chamber 126 refilled with fluid. If the piston 94 overtravels to the right, the chamber 92 is replenished with fluid from a control chamber 126<SP>1</SP> in a similar manner. If the movement of a ram 98 on one side of the piston 94 is obstructed, the fluid pressure on the opposite side of the piston 94 is increased and forces open a valve 100 so that the fluid flows through a by-pass 99 and then opens a further valve 100. Circulation of the fluid through the by-pass 99 causes the piston 94 to stop.
