Abstract

A hydraulically or pneumatically actuated reciprocating motor comprises large and small pistons 5, 6 working in cylinders 2, 3 separated by an intermediate wall 4, an inlet 19 to the small cylinder 3, an outlet 18 from the large cylinder 2, and a pair of valve plates 12, 13 movable by the pistons' reciprocations to control fluid-flow through ducts 16 in the intermediate wall 4. In the position shown, fluid entering the cylinder 3 through the inlet 19 moves piston 6 downwards, fluid beneath the piston 5 being exhausted through the outlet 18. At the end of the downward stroke the large piston 5, acting through a spring 22, pushes the valve plate 12 against the upper surface 10 of the wall 4, thereby closing outlet 18. Spacers 15 cause simultaneous movement of the valve plate 13 away from the lower surface 11 of the wall 4, whereby . fluid from cylinder 3 is communicated through ducts 16 to the large cylinder 2 and the pistons perform an upward stroke. The cycle is then repeated. A number of arrangements for ensuring the correct starting and stopping of the reciprocations are described.
