[Class 78 (i)] In an escalator comprising steps mounted on an endless chain and provided with rollers engaging guide tracks, brushes are provided which by the operation of the escalator, automatically sweep the rollers and tracks. In the embodiment shown, steps S, mounted on chains 7, 8 are guided by pairs of rollers 26, 28 along tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 which together with a guard rail 98, are swept clean by brushes 66, 67, and 79 mounted on each of the chains. The supporting frames 62, 74 of these brushes are respectively mounted on the T-shaped and square-shaped ends 70, 75 of a bolt 68 extending through one of the pins 18a connecting the links of the chains. A forked member 80, secured to the frame 74, engages with an adjacent chain pin 53 to ensure the brushes maintaining their engagement with the tracks. A steel wire brush 59a and a similar brush (not shown) may be provided in front of the brushes 79, 67 to assist in cleaning the tracks. Brushes 50, 51 mounted on the frame 41, clean the rollers 26, these brushes bearing with unequal pressure on the rollers whereby the friction between the rollers and one of the brushes rotates the rollers against the other brush. This may be accomplished by adjusting the position of the brushes or by having the bristles of one brush heavier and thicker than those of the other. The treads of the steps are kept clean by a brush 46 supported on the frame 41, comprising groups of bristles extending transversely of the steps and spaced so as to engage only in the grooves 30 of the treads.
