Abstract

In the manufacture of a vulcanized composition incorporating rubber and a preponderating proportion of bitumen, unvulcanized rubber in liquid form, e.g. in solution or dispersion, is mixed with a bituminous vehicle, sulphur is added at a temperature below vulcanizing temperature, if desired with an accelerator or an activator of vulcanization, and subsequently the activator or the accelerator or both are added when it is desired that vulcanization should commence. The vulcanization may be initiated by heating, but it proceeds to completion in the cold. The bituminous vehicle may comprise tar having an appreciable content of volatile oils, and a viscous natural or artificial bitumen. Fillers and salt may be added. The composition may be used for impregnating, insulating, or road-making. Specification 460,854 is referred to.
