Abstract
An insulating composition is prepared by admixing a refined liquid petroleum product such as high grade lubricating oil with wholly or partially deresinated guttapercha and/or balata. Generally the gutta content is not less than 50 per cent, but for inner layers of cable insulation may be as low as 10 per cent. The liquid petroleums may also be added to the compositions of the parent Specification to render them more plastic. The invention also includes a composition comprising guttapercha or balata of low resin content, a semi-solid petroleum product, and a bitumen of low ash and free carbon content, such as described in Specification 322,208, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.]. The compositions may be heat treated as described in Specification 326,481, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.].
