Abstract

Ebonite containing stone chippings, gravel and the like is made by compounding rubber with fillers, vulcanizing ingredients, &c., crumbling the mix, adding the chippings, moulding and vulcanizing. According to an example, 15 parts of unvulcanized rubber, 20 parts of talite (a siliceous earth containing oxides of iron and aluminium), 20 parts of chalk, 25 parts of lime, 5 parts of asphalt, and 15 parts of sulphur, are compounded on mixing rolls, partially vulcanized by heating to 150 DEG C. for 15 minutes, and crumbled between cold rolls. 7 parts of this mixture are added to 11 parts of stone chippings, and blocks are moulded. If intended for paving, an ebonite layer and resilient rubber cap are applied, and the whole is vulcanized.
