Abstract
460,947. Rail tractors and motor vehicles. ENTREPRISE DROUARD FRERES. June 26, 1936, Nos. 17793 and 17794. Convention dates, June 26, 1935 and Dec. 17, 1935. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A railway motor truck or tractor is driven through chain gearing by a readily-removable power unit fixed to one side of the truck and having a longitudinal driving shaft, braking means being provided acting both on the wheels and the rails. When the power unit has been removed the truck itself can be readily removed from the rails. In the construction shown, the frame a of the truck, which may carry a load platform, is mounted on rail wheels b driven from a longitudinal shaft h through reversing gear j, shaft d, and chain gearing e, f providing a reducing gear. The shaft h is connected by a slip joint p<1> to a power unit comprising a motor m, clutch, and changespeed gear. The power unit is provided with handles n, o and rests on a bracket l on the truck, being secured in position by a pin r. The rear end of the power unit has a sleeve q which engages over the end of a casing k on the truck. Two sets of braking means are described acting on the wheels b through pivoted shoes or bands and on the rails by slippers w, Fig. 6. The slippers are carried by parallel links z controlled by springs z<1>, and are operated by a hand or foot lever x through a shaft y and cams or levers. When long loads are to be carried, the ends beyond the motor truck may be supported by one or more trailing trucks. More than one power unit may be mounted on the truck, and all the wheels may not be driven.
