Abstract
460,538. Mail shoots. BRIDGMAN, G. A. Sept. 13, 1935, No. 25479. [Class 78 (i)] A mail shoot passing through successive floors of a building comprises a letter conducting channel 15, Figs.- 3 and 8, enclosed by cheek pieces 6 fixed to angle-iron upright supports 5 which are attached to a base wall D by plates 3 during the erection of the building. Before the channel 15 is placed in the cheek pieces, the wall D is surfaced with plaster 10 and finishing courses 11, 12, 13, 14 of marble are applied, which fit close against the cheekpieces. U-shaped brackets 23, Figs. 3 and 5, are riveted to the channels 15. These brackets are bolted to the angle-irons 5 by bolts 25 passing through lugs 24 and back plates 26 so that the channels may be vertically adjusted. The front of the channels between floors is closed by two detachable glass panels 18, 18a, the plates 18, 18a being provided with mouldings 19 which fit, as shown in Fig. 8, inturned flanges 7, 17 respectively of the cheeks 6 and channel 15. The lower panel 18a has at its upper edge a locking bar 43 with a barrel lock 46, the bolt of which engages a recess 45 in a bar 44 carried by the side arms of a bracket 23. A flange 49 on the lower edge of the upper panel 18 enters the casing 43 and rests on the bar 44. The 'floor section' of the shoot comprises a thimble 60 having a tapered lining 63 which enters the shoot 15 beneath it and receives the tapered end 64 of a letter conducting tube 65 which rises above the floor A into the base of the installation on that floor. The front of the shoot is finished off with base and ceiling pieces 29, 55. The base 29 is bolted at 34 to the uprights 5 and receives a sill 35 bolted to the uprights at 38. The lower panel 18a has a rail 41 interlocking with the top flange of the sill 35. A cross-bar 50 at the top of the upper panel 18 engages behind lugs 51 on a frame 52 bolted to the uprights at 54 and covered by an apron 58 extending into the ceiling piece 55.
