Abstract

460,537. Shoots. BRIDGMAN, G. A. Sept. 13, 1935, No. 25478. [Class 78 (i)] A mail shoot passing through successive floors of a building comprises separate superposed sidechannel sections 5, Figs. 4 and 5, spaced apart and secured by screws passing through flanges 4 to plates 2 which are attached to the rough base wall A during the erection of the building by screw bolts and plugs. The wall is then faced with plaster D and marble facing E, so that the shoot is inset therein, and the floor B through which the shoot passes, formed, the shoot being protected and spaced from the floor B by a metal thimble 15 embedded therein. The back of the shoot is next applied, this consisting of metal plates which are slid downwardly into place and overlap at 14 to provide a letter shed. Each plate 13 has rearwardly turned flanges 11 at its edges and a pair of outwardly turned flanges 12 attached to its back, the flanges 11, 12 engaging respectively with shoulders 10 and grooves 9 in the flanges 4. At the front the channels 5 have inner and outer flanges 7, 8 to receive detachable front panels 31, 32 and cross-bars 21, 23 by which the panels and ceiling and floor pieces 52, 24 are secured in place. The shoot section passing through the floor B consists of a plate 17, Figs. 4 and 6, having shouldered flanges 18, 19 to engage the channel flanges 8, this plate being held in position by a tension plate 20 engaging the flanges 7. The lower edge of plate 17 rests on a cross-bar 21 while its upper edge is engaged by letter shed lugs 22 on the cross-bar 23. The ends of all the cross-bars are forked and engage between the flanges 7, 8, these forked ends being then expanded or opened by screws to hold the cross-bars in place. The floor piece 24 is secured to the cross-bar 23 by screws 26 passing through lugs 28 on the bar 23. The ceiling piece comprises a cap 49 secured to the flanges 8 by bolts 50 and a plate 51. A plate 52 with flared lateral spring flanges is pushed up into the cap 49 and rests against lugs 47 on the cross-bar 21, and on a top flange 35 of a panel 31. The front of the shoot between floors consists of two glass panels 31, 32 held between mouldings 34, Fig. 5, which fit as shown between the pairs of flanges 7, 8. The top and bottom edges of the panels 31 are provided with flanges 35, the bottom flange of panel 31 engaging a locking bar 38, Fig. 16, provided at the top of panel 32. This bar is locked to a cross-bar 40 by a barrel lock 39. Specifications 460,536 and 460,545 are referred to.
