459,937. Engine valve-gear; pistons; packing. LINCOLN ENGINEERING CO., 5701, Natural Bridge Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. April 12, 1935, No. 11426. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 17, 1936]. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (ii)] [See also Group XXVIII] A pump for lubricant comprises high and lowpressure stages, each operated by a compressed-air piston 60. Air is distributed to the motive cylinder 39 of the 1.p. pump by a valve 77, having grooves 91, 95 which alternately connect the two ends of the cylinder to the air inlet 73 and to exhaust ports 93, 97. The valve is held in its extreme position by spring- pressed balls 105 engaging grooves in the valve, and the throw-over is effected by springs 79, 81, which are compressed when a collar 61 on the valve-rod 59 engages the ends of a recess 53 in the rod 30. The h.p. plunger 117 is similarly. operated, but in this case the passages 49, 47, 51 leading to the lower end of the motor cylinder 113 are normally closed, the return stroke of the plunger 117 being effected by the pressure of the lubricant. Furthermore, the supply of air to the cylinder 113 can be entirely cut off by means of a valve 136. The motor pistons 60 are packed by cup-leathers of natural or synthetic rubber. In order to avoid distortion of the cup-leathers the cover-plates 58, 68 are recessed and are spaced from the centreplate 64 by means of washers 72. The pistons are secured to their rods by means of hollow nuts 55.
