Abstract
Moulded bodies of a difficultly fusible alloy comprising a hard carbide, an auxiliary metal acting as a solvent on the carbide or as a flux, and another metal to increase the elasticity of the alloy, are formed by placing a mixture of the alloy constituents in a closed mould maintained in vacuo and heating until the constituents are melted, a light pressure being exerted on the constituents during heating which pressure is increased when fusion occurs. The pressure may be exerted by means of graphite pistons sliding in a channel or channels in a graphite mould. The heating may be stopped suddenly or diminished gradually and cooling may be effected in a current of hydrogen. The mixture may comprise 85 per cent of tungsten carbide, 12 per cent of cobalt and 3 per cent of nickel or molybdenum. Copper, gold, silver and platinum may also be employed as the third constituent.
