Description

Patented 14, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- HUGH S. COOPER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO KEMET LABORATORIES COM- PANY, INC., A CORPORATION OF NEW, YORK.
ALLOY.
No Drawing.
cutting qualities has been prepared with the following composition: tungsten, 6.80%; titanium, 8.98%; aluminum, 7.87%;silicon, 4.75%; nickel, balance, except for carbon and a small undetermined amount of iron present as an impurity. However, my invention is not limited to this precise composition as alloys possessing good cutting qualities may be prepared within the range set forth in the following table: tungsten, 1% to 12%; titanium, 1% to 12%; aluminum, 4% to 10%; silicon, 2% to 6%; nickel, balance, except for carbon which may vary from 0.10% to 1.50%, the preferred carbon content being 0.50%.
Application filed February 11, 1925. Serial No. 8,520.
-It is possible to produce the alloy by Va- I rious methods. One method consists in melting tungsten-, titanium-, aluminum-, silicon-, and nickel-containing materials in a graphite crucible in any suitable type of furnace'and then casting in a carbon mold. No heat treatment of the alloy is required in order to render it suitable as a cutting tool.
I claim:
1. An alloy containing a preponderating I amount of a metal having the properties of nickel and cobalt; from 1% to 12% each of tungstenand titanium; from 4% to 10% of aluminum; and from 2% to 6% of silicon;
2. An alloy containing from 4 to 10% aluminium, 2 to 6% silicon, 1 to 12% tungsten, lto 12% titanium, the balance being principally nickel.
3. A cutting tool composed of an alloy containing from 4 to 10% aluminum, 2 to 6% silicon, 1 to 12% each of tungsten and titanium, the balance being principally nickel.
In testimony whereof, I alfix my signature.
HUGH s. COOPER.
