[Class 38 (v)] In an electromagnetic switch for controlling one or more electric circuits which comprises two solenoids arranged to transmit motion in opposite directions to a common core, the movements of the core producing an interruption in the current supply to the operating solenoid after it has effected the required movement of the core, the means for controlling the switch contacts are arranged to operate between the two solenoids. As shown, the two solenoids 68, 70 have a common core 64 slidably mounted within them, an arm 29 bearing a contact-operating projection 79 being attached to the core and arranged to operate between the adjacent but separated ends of the solenoids. A series of sets of cooperating spring contacts 73, 85 76, 88 are arranged to be engaged and separated by the insulating projection at the ends of its travel, one or more of such contact sets being connected in controlled circuits and the remainder in the solenoid circuits in such a manner that when the circuit of either solenoid is completed the consequent movement of the core breaks the circuit of the operating solenoid and prepares the circuit of the other solenoid. In an alternative arrangement also described, Figs. 5 and 6, (not shown) the core normally assumes a position midway between the two solenoids, the contacts being so arranged that movement may be effected in one or more stages in opposite directions from this central position. At the ends of its travel, the core engages a fixed magnetic core 67 or 69. The contacts are carried on an insulating base 27 through which the operating rod 29 projects.
