Abstract

A film evaporator comprising a pair of oppositely rotating, internally heated, drying cylinders 10 has a feeding hopper 14 with the end walls 14<b> adjustable into contact with the drying surfaces when the cylinders are adjusted. Each end wall 14<b> has joint members bearing on the cylinders in three independent parts with circular edges, the side parts 31 being adjusted by screws 31<1> in slots 33 and the centre part 30 being vertically adjusted by a screw 32 into the inter <PICT:0459048/III/1> <PICT:0459048/III/2> mediate space. Vertically adjustable joint members 34 are also provided on the side walls 14<a> of the hopper. The joint members may be spring-pressed against the cylinders. The material is pressed on to the cylinder by rollers 17 and when removed by scrapers 18 falls into troughs 20 with screw conveyers. Vapours are led off by pipes 24, 25. The material is fed to the hopper through a valve 16 with a crank 43 on its spindle 44 connected by a link 42 to an arm 41 of a lever pivoted at 40, the other arm 39 of which is moved by a roller 36 in a slot 37 on a crank arm 38 rotating with the cylinder 10, so that the valve is opened on each rotation of the latter and is closed by a counterweight 45. The length of the link 42 may be adjusted by a screw.
