Abstract

<PICT:0457058/III/1> Emulsifying-apparatus for liquids comprises a gear pump in which there is sufficient clearance between the gears 1 and 2 and the casing 3 to provide a definite leakage path for the liquid in the pump back from the outlet 15 to the inlet 14 in counter-current to the body of liquid carried round between the teeth of the gears, and in which a positive pressure is maintained at the outlet as compared with the pressure at the inlet, sufficient to promote the flow of liquid along the leakage path. This pressure is preferably maintained by a valve 16, the loading being adjustable by spring 17. Other types of valves, such as poppet, flap or ball valves, may be used, but the elongated conical valve shown tends to break up any lumps or aggregates formed in the emulsion. The gears rotate in the direction of the arrows shown in the Figure, gear 1 being driven.
